There’s no higher recognition of a site’s historical and cultural significance than the award of UNESCO World Heritage Site status. From natural wonders to epic ancient cities, there are dozens of UNESCO sites all over the world, renowned and celebrated for their beauty and heritage.

The Adriatic coast is home to a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, from the breath-taking natural harbour of Kotor in Montenegro, to the gorgeous Diocletian’s Palace in the Croatian city of Split (the Old Town of which is also on the UNESCO list). Kotor – Montenegro

The history of Kotor stretches back to the Middle Ages, when it was a vital hub of cultural and commercial activity. The town in this breath-taking natural harbour is surrounded by wonderful scenery, and is a popular stop on many luxury sailboat charters setting off in the region. A disastrous earthquake hit the city in 1979, destroying many of the most beautiful buildings, including four Romanesque churches. Luckily, when the site was credited with UNESCO status, the buildings were gradually restored.

Dubrovnik – Croatia

Known as the ‘Jewel of the Adriatic’, the incredible walled city of Dubrovnik is a must-see for any yacht charters visiting Croatia. The city itself, enclosed by enormous 16th-century stone walls, is paved with limestone, and many of the buildings are made from this material, giving the impression that you’re walking through a marble city. The city is a popular set for Hollywood filmmakers, as well as being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Balkans.

Split – Croatia

Head north from Dubrovnik and you’ll find the vibrant city of Split. Though it doesn’t immediately have the wow-factor of Dubrovnik’s walls, once you meander into the winding alleyways of the Old Town and explore the impressive Diocletian Palace, you’ll start to see why this place was credited with UNESCO status. Be sure to stop off here on any luxury yacht charter and enjoy the thriving nightlife scene.

Trogir – Croatia

27 km west of Split lies Trogir. Known locally as “Little Dubrovnik” the historic part of the town is situated on a small island. It hosts a myriad of palaces, churches, and towers, as well as a fortress on a small island, Trogir has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997. The old town boasts a plethora of cafes, bars hotels and restaurants in which to spend a very pleasant evening in stunning surroundings.
